Hello, you have reached the profile page of George A. Lopez. I offer varied mining
engineering, managerial, project management, and information technology expertise. I
have fifteen years of mining experience. I enjoy working in the underground mining
environment while at the same time utilizing my engineering skills to resolve complex
mining and managerial challenges.
I have hands-on experience in many phases and aspects of underground mining
including positions such as: underground supply trammer (mucker), contract miner,
front-line supervisor, level foreman, Ventilation department head, and drilling project
manager. I served on the board of directors for the Tucson Section of the Society for
Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) of the American Institute of Mining,
Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME) and served as its chairman in 1991.
I worked at both of Magma Copper Company’s underground mines, the Superior and
San Manuel operations. I was born and raised in Superior, Arizona and worked
summers at the mine while attending the University of Arizona’s college of mines. In
the early 80’s I took a year off from school so that I would have more time to work my
way through the miner-training program at Magma’s Superior underground
operations. I then proceeded to work for another year as a contract miner. My opinion
is if I was going to be a Mining Engineer then I should know mining from it very basics.
I returned to the University of Arizona and completed my studies for a degree in Mining
Engineering in 1985.
The country was still pulling out of a recession that impacted the mining industry. I
was able to find work at San Manuel as a contract miner. The mine manager stated
that they would get me in the door but that I would have to start the way they used to
start many of the old mining engineers. Mining is good work and I was appreciative for
the job. I eventually worked my way into the following positions:
· Underground Surveyor
· Muck Boss (Production Supervisor/Team Lead)
· Assistant Production Engineer
· Assistant Ventilation Engineer
· Senior Ventilation Engineer and Department Head / Project Manager
· Drilling Project Manager
· Level Foreman
